Nganjo Australia was started by Mike Norriss in 1998 in Fremantle, Western Australia — where the river meets the sea. “Freo” is about 20 minutes south of Perth, the capital of WA and the most isolated city in the world.
After 10 years of successful operation, Mike has sold the business to Maxine Wright — who is based ‘just down the road’. Maxine is involved in clothing and footwear and is keen to develop Nganjo Australia, bringing her own unique style and qualities.
Mike says, “I have moved away from clothing, footwear and shelter, to focus on shelter. After starting Nganjo from scratch, fighting for the rights to the generic Australian word ‘ugg’ and being involved for more than 10 years, I will always be a part of the industry. Nganjo has been a journey for me and thanks to all of you involved!”
Nganjo sheepskin footwear and products has its origins in the Aussie ugg boot — generic for ‘boots made of sheepskin with the fleece inside’. Ugg boots are also known as ug boots or ugh boots.

There are many stories about how the word ugoriginated. One yarn is that the early settlers said “they ‘ug your feet”. But it’s a generic term for boots made of sheepskin with the fleece inside.

Nganjo (pr. “nanjo”) comes from “jinna nganjo” — an Aboriginal word of the Noongar people for European boot / shoe.
Our slogan is: “aussie with a silent g!” We’re thinking about changing it to: “Antipodean footwear for youse Northerners”.
