You’ve seen Pamela Anderson wearing them, Russell Crowe has a pair, and even the frail US actress Lara Flynn Boyle requested some during her recent visit to Western Australia. So, what is it about Aussie ugh boots that are having the stars demanding our native fashion faux pas? Quality sheepskin and craftsmanship, insists Mike Norriss, owner of Nganjo Footwear Australia based in Fremantle (which calls its brand ug boots), Western Australia. |
A website-driven business, it currently exports to more than seven places including the US and countries in Europe. The boots, handcrafted in Australia using local wool, have seen an increase of more than 50 per cent in sales from overseas customers in the past year.
Norriss attributes the boom to the fickle fashion industry, where the fastest thing on feet is the beloved fur-lined boot. After living in London and identifying a gap in the market, he began exporting the boots to the UK in 1998. It made sense to export a seasonal product, says Norriss, who notes that the British prefer the Australian original “rather than cheap imitations in their own country”.
Half Nganjo’s market is now the US. “We are only a small team and I usually attend only a few trade shows per year such as London’s 40 Degrees,” Norriss says. He advocates placement on the Google search engine as a way of attracting customers — although nothing beats the power of being seen on celebrities’ feet.
